No More Back Pain……With Advanced Spinal Surgeries

Back pain or Spine pain will be experienced almost by everyone once in a lifetime. Intervertebral discs are made up of a vertebra, bony segments, and fibrous tissues. Fracture, infection of the spine, degenerative disease, disc dislocation, spine deformity will lead to a chronic back pain. Acute back pain can be treated with medication, physiotherapy whereas chronic back pain is treated only by surgical intervention.

The surgical methods used to treat chronic back pain and spine related conditions are open surgery and minimally invasive surgery. Open surgery will be lengthy and it needs a long resting period. But, Minimally invasive spine surgery will give a faster recovery. That’s why it is recommended by the orthopedic surgeons.

There are some surgical methods used for the spine surgery are:

Minimally Invasive Spine Fusion Surgery

In this method, the orthopedic surgeon makes small incisions to reach the spine. When compared to the traditional method, this procedure comprises only small incisions instead of a large incision. The fluoroscopy is inserted in the small incision which enables the accuracy and reduces operative risks. This procedure is more advanced as it allows only less trauma, less scar, and a few days of hospital stay.

Lumbar Disc Replacement

In between the vertebrae, the intervertebral disc is located. Nucleus pulposus, a jelly-like substance is present in the intervertebral disc. The substance works as a shock absorber. When the nucleus pulposus is damaged, there will be an elevated strain on the surrounding collagen tissue. This condition finally leads to the disc degeneration and it causes back pain.

Since Lumbar disc replacement is a large procedure, general anesthesia is administered to the patient. The surgeon makes an incision in the abdomen to access the spine. Then the damaged intervertebral disc is removed. The surgeon replaces the removed disc with an artificial prosthesis which is usually made up of a metal/ metal &plastic. Then, the incision is sutured. The patient is put on medicines to feel pain-free. The patient may be in the hospital for 3-5 days depends on his post-operative condition.

Lumbar Spinal Fusion

In this conservative method, pain or instability of degenerative disc is treated. In the surgery, screws are inserted into the bony segments of spinal which are then connected with rods. A small bone piece is taken out from the patient’s pelvic area and placed across the vertebrae so as to form a new bone between two vertebrae. Restricting the movement of vertebrae and relieving pain is the ultimate objective of the surgery.

During hip replacement surgery, the surgeon removes a damaged joint with an artificial joint which is made of metal and plastic components.  It is usually performed when all other treatment options are found to be a failure to relieve pain.
Dr. S.S Soni is famous for his patient-friendly measures and expertise in joint replacement surgeries.      He always suggests for non-invasive procedures.

Why Hip Replacement Surgery Needed?

Conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, avascular necrosis, injury due to fall and bone tumors may lead to the breakdown of the hip joint and the need for replacement.

  • Surgeon makes an opening over the front or side of the hip, through the layers of tissue
  • Removes the damaged bone and cartilage, leaving the healthy bone intact
  • The damaged socket is replaced by implanting a  prosthetic socket into the pelvic bone
  • Replaces the round ball on the top of the femur with the prosthetic ball which is attached to a stem that fits into the thigh bone.

After the Surgery

Less invasive techniques are opted both by the surgeon and patient as the recovery is less in them.  After surgery, blood clot prevention measures are taken.  The patient will be encouraged to sit up and even try walking with walker soon after surgery.  During and after surgery the patient is instructed to wear an elastic compression stocking similar to a blood pressure cuff on the lower leg so that due to the pressure exerted by the inflated sleeves keep blood from pooling in the leg veins and hence reduce the chances of the blood clot.  They physician prescribe an injected or oral blood thinner after the surgery.  Physical therapy exercises will help to regain the strength of joints and muscles.

Measures to take after surgery

Climbing on stairs reduce to minimum
Use a firm straight-back chair
Avoid fall
Use elevated toilet seat so that bending can be avoided
Six to twelve weeks after the surgery make an appointment with the surgeon to ensure the healing process.  A complete recovery will happen after 12 months.

Flexible Knees By Knee Replacement Surgery

Knee replacement is a surgical procedure that replaces the diseased knee joint. When an injury or arthritis occurs, the ability to bend and flex your knees can become difficult due to damage, inflammation, and pain. Over time, the damage progresses and becomes more difficult and painful.
When your knee got damaged you may have tried medicines, injection, and physical therapy. If nothing seems to work then, in that case, it is always better to do Knee Replacement Surgery. Severe arthritis pain can also be solved by Knee replacement surgery

A total knee replacement surgery is a surgical procedure where the diseased knee joint is replaced with an artificial material. Knee replacement is also called as arthroplasty.

The main reason behind knee replacement surgery is osteoarthritis. The age related condition is also very common and occurs when the cartilage cushion between the knee and bone joints breakdown.
  • Severe knee pain or stiffness that makes them uncomfortable while doing their daily activities.
  • Chronic knee inflammation and swelling
  • Knee deformity- Noticeable arch on the inside and outside of the knee
  • Inability to carry out daily works which resulting depression on them
Types of Knee Replacement surgery

Total knee replacement

In this type surgery, both sides of knee joints are replaced, it is the most common procedure.
This type of surgery lasts for mainly 1 to 3 hours. In Total knee, replacement surgery have less pain and better mobility

Partial knee replacement

The partial knee replacement replaces only one side of the knee this type replacement, the incision will be smaller , but it does not last as long as a total replacement. This type of surgery is suitable for people who have damaged only one of their knee. The hospital stay and recovery period are shorter in this case.

Ankle Arthroscopy

Ankle arthroscopy is a surgical process that is used to operate the ankle joint area with the help of tiny surgical tools and camera by making small incision. A variety of ankle problems can be treated by ankle arthroscopy for their surgical evaluate and treatment. An ankle arthroscopy is used for various problems and injuries such as

·         Inflammation of ankle joint lining (synovitis)

·         Impingement

·         Ostrochondritis dessicans

·         Treating loose parts of cartilage

·         Infection on ankle

·         Ankle arthritis

·         Instability in ankle

·         Fractures in ankle

These problems and injuries cause swelling, pain, and limit ankle movement. Ankle arthroscopy is highly helpful in treating these problems.

Ankle arthroscopy is a minimally invasive process that authorizes doctors to diagnose and treat ankle joint disorders and injuries by making small incisions in the skin. A direct visualization is possible to visual inside of ankle through ankle arthroscopy without making large incisions. In the process, tiny television camera, a thin fiber optic light, and magnifying lens are put in the affected area and allow the doctor to analyse the problem. The diagnosis is done by a physical examination and other imaging tests such as MRI, CT scan, or X-rays.

Ankle arthroscopy is helpful to minimize the problems encountered with developing large incisions such as bleeding, pain, infections, and wound break down. Ankle arthroscopy is an outpatient procedure and patients may be capable to work actively very soon after the surgery. Ankle arthroscopy provides excellent results and needs two weeks to recovering completely.

Ankle arthroscopy is recommended, when

·         Pain in ankle is not controlled by the medications

·         Feeling of vomiting, nausea, chills, and fever

·         Swelling, wound redness, drainage, or warmth

·         Weakness, numbness, or tingling

Joint Replacement Surgery for Curing Persistent Pain and Discomfort

Joint pains are often a part and parcel of ageing. They can occur in the younger generation as well due to trauma from accidents or due to some diseases such as arthritis. Living with the pain and discomfort can be tough, especially when it interferes with the mobility and everyday life activities.

Joint replacement surgery is done when other methods of treatment for curing joint pain and restoring full mobility does not find success. The procedure involves replacing the affected joints with an artificial prosthesis designed to mimic the functions and capabilities of the natural joint.

The procedure of joint replacement is usually performed to correct irregularities on joints like knees, shoulder, hips, ankles, elbows and fingers. The orthopaedic surgery helps in eliminating pain and restoring motion with the flexibility of the artificial joint.

Scope of joint replacement

  • Joint replacement surgery is usually performed in the following cases: -
  • Joint disorders caused due to arthritis
  • Persistent pain, stiffness, and inflammation in joint
  • Wear and tear in joints

Joint replacement procedure

The procedure of joint replacement involves the replacement of the damaged joints by artificial prosthesis made of materials such as plastic or inert metals. These are non-reactive and hence do not cause infections. The prosthesis is either cemented or uncemented depending on the age of the patient. In case of younger people, the joints are left uncemented to enable the bones to grow into it, fixing it in place while in the older generation, they are cemented in place. With the development in technology, joint replacements have been simplified with minimally invasive procedures of arthroscopy.A pioneer in joint replacement and arthroscopy,  Dr SS Soni, is one of the best orthopaedic surgeons in Jaipur.
